Board of Directors

President : Lauren Tezak, MS APRN AGACNP-BC

Lauren Tezak's career has focused primarily in acute care including but not limited to Pulmonary Critical Care, Cardiothoracic Transplant, Mechanical Circulatory Support and Plastics/Reconstruction. She initially received her ADN in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 1996 and then received her BSN from UTEP in 2012. Lauren completed her MSN in 2015 at Texas Woman’s University as an AGACNP. Her pastimes included spending time with her grown daughter, traveling, working out and volunteering to help PAY IT FORWARD. 

President Elect: Shanea Hall, MSN, APRN, FNP-BC

Shanea Hall earned a BSN from Pacific Lutheran University in 2011 and started her nursing career at Houston Methodist Hospital in the Transplant IMU. She then transitioned to managing an outpatient free clinic in the community. After completing her MSN as an FNP from the UTHSC-H in 2016, she trained in a nurse practitioner residency in primary care at the Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center and eventually became the program director. She currently works as a Population Health Np for a physician group. Shanea’s interests include improving her Spanish speaking skills, collecting passport stamps, rugby, and her adorable dogs. 

Past President : Mari Galang, BSN, RN, CCRN-CMC-CSC

Mari T. Galang, MSN, APRN, AGACNP is an Adult/Gerontology Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. She started her nursing career after graduating with an Associate’s Degree from Kingwood Community College in 2007. She then went on to get her Bachelor’s degree and her Master’s Degree from the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston.

Mari has a wide range of experience from the General-Surgical Telemetry to Cardiovascular and Transplant Critical Care. She currently is in the field of Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery. She works in collaboration with her team in helping patients achieve their health goals.

An avid consumer of the literary form, Mari’s favourite reading genres include science fiction, murder mystery, personal finance, and financial independence. She also loves to visit national parks and hike the trails with her husband.

Treasurer: Katherine Simpson, RN

Katherine Simpson serves as an assistant professor of nursing, in Houston, Texas. Her areas of expertise are in legal nurse consulting, nursing leadership, education and increasing evidence-based practice at the bedside. Her clinical experience includes 25 years of ICU/critical care nursing in the areas of neuroscience and coronary care. Katharine currently practices as a nurse practitioner in the ambulatory clinic setting and clinical nurse in the post anesthesia care unit. She holds certifications as a legal nurse consultant, nurse practitioner, neuroscience RN, as well as a certification as a cardiovascular registered nurse. She will complete her Doctor of Nursing practice (DNP) spring of 2021. Katharine is a Joanna Briggs research scholar and has been a member of HANP since 2015.

Lavender A. Muirhead MSN, APRN-FNP-C is a Family nurse practitioner she began her career in nursing 19 years ago as a LVN after graduating from Houston Community College. She then went on to get her Bachelor’s degree from University of Texas Health Science center Houston (UTHSC -Houston) and her Master’s from University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston.
Lavender has a wide array of nursing experiences from long term care, home health nursing, travel nursing, intensive care both surgical and neurological. She currently works as a Family nurse practitioner at privately owned medical practice in Baytown. Her values include kindness, integrity, responsibility and consistency.

At Large Director: Danielle Burgess, APRN, MSN, FNP-C

Danielle is a board-certified Family Nurse Practitioner, specializing in Preventative Health & Wellness. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio. She worked as an emergency room nurse in multiple hospitals across Texas and California before returning to school to further her education. She then graduated from The University of Texas Medical Branch with a Master’s of Science in Nursing. Danielle’s main goal is to deliver holistic healthcare to ensure her patients live their healthiest and best lives. She enjoys educating, customizing patient care, and developing meaningful relationships with her patients.

At Large Director: Heather Perez, FNP-C
Memorial Hermann Health Centers for Schools Alief Clinic

Heather Perez, APRN, FNP-C, At Large Director, received her  BSN, RN from the University of the Incarnate Word and then returned to Houston to work as an ICU and surgical recovery nurse for several years.  After her two oldest children were born, she changed careers and began working as a school nurse for middle schools in Cy-Fair ISD, following her mother and older sister into the education world. After receiving her Master's of Science in Nursing from Prairie View A&M, she first worked as a family nurse practitioner in a medical clinic. She later returned to working with middle-school age children running a school-based health clinic on the campus of an area school. She has been a member of HANP since 2013, and her areas of expertise include family primary care, pediatric care, open heart recovery, and PACU.

Heather is married and has three children, two in college and one in middle school. She also has two feline fur babies. She and her husband are budding wine connoisseurs and they enjoy traveling to vineyards around the country. She also enjoys reading, cooking, and cheering for all Houston professional and collegiate sports. Go COOGS!
