Last month we celebrated Memorial Day to commemorate our fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom. HANP salutes them and all the individuals that have served our country and who are currently serving. Thank you so much for your service.
Hurricane Season is here. Last year Houston did not fare well, but we remained strong as a community helping each other to come through it even stronger as a whole. On that note, I have extended an invitation to Mr. Mark Sastre to talk about how we can help our community in the event of a disaster such as Harvey. The limitation in our scope of practice prevented us from independently helping the victims in our capacity as nurse practitioners. Hopefully, Mr. Sastre can enlighten us on how we can help as NPs.
Recent events highlighted the importance of mental health in everyone's wellbeing. This is the reason why I want to make mental health an important part of my message this month. The deaths of Kate Spade, a famous designer and Anthony Bourdain, a famous chef/storyteller/writer trigger very strong emotions in me. As clinicians we must be sensitive towards the needs of our patients and H&P should always include a psychological assessment.
It is my belief that making it a routine part of our assessment will help minimize, if not totally eliminate the stigma attached to mental illness. As individuals, we can always try to be mindful of people around us. Not everyone is strong enough or able to reach out and verbalize their mental issues. They may not even be aware of a problem. Being in this profession gives us the ability to observe and monitor tell-tale signs of mental illness.
The highest rate of suicide is found among gay teens. Bullying and harassment by peers as well as rejection from loved ones seem to be major precipitating causes. Many people are inadequately treated for unrelenting pain or substance abuse. Living in a well developed and affluent country like ours exposes us to a lot of stress. Many people are unable to handle the stress and it could trigger feelings of defeat and helplessness. We must emphasize that help is always accessible and reaching out is welcome.
A lot of individuals have inner struggles that are not apparent to us so, please treat everyone with extra kindness and care because you don’t know what they are going through in their lives. Let us practice mindfulness and proceed with mindful presence.
The CE meeting this month was presented by our President-Elect Mari Galang and was sponsored by Encompass. We had a great turn out and hope to see everyone at our next meeting on July 12th at Grotto Ristorante, located at 4715 Westheimer Rd., Houston, TX 77027. The meeting will be a pharmaceutical meeting sponsored by Gilead. Please visit www.hanp.org for more details and to register.
I am looking forward to our members that are pursuing their doctoral studies to give their project presentations to the membership. This is an excellent opportunity to support our members in their pursuit of higher education. Please plan to attend. It will be a CE Meeting in October. More information to follow.
The Education Committee is working very hard. Great News! The fall conference agenda and speakers have been finalized. Please save the dates of November 2nd and 3rd for our Annual HANP conference. Registration is now open.
Bios of the Nominees for the Board of Directors are on the website. Get to know the potential board members. Please review and vote. Voting will close June 30th.
HANP via Elizabeth Giggliotti is working with TNP regarding the Preceptor Task Force. We will inform you of the latest development on this matter. I encourage the membership to be a preceptor and be a partner in molding the new generation of NPs.
We are planning a couple of opportunities for members to donate to the TNP Political Action Committee (PAC) this summer. Watch for the details of a raffle around July 4th and fundraising opportunity following the August monthly meeting. Our recent t-shirt sales effort raised more than $1,000 for the PAC! Thank you!
Where there is vision, there is hope.
